FTOP’s Koen van der Bogt interviewed in Dutch Surgical Journal

06 mrt FTOP’s Koen van der Bogt interviewed in Dutch Surgical Journal

As specialists in the relation between sleep deprivation, ethanol, and surgical performance, the FTOP study group was asked to comment on the “0 is de norm” rule that has been introduced in the Netherlands. This rule states that no alcohol will be consumed during any form of backup call. Obviously, this suits the professional and social status and responsibility of the medical specialist. However, one must be aware that the effects of sleep deprivation may be as severe as the effects of alcohol intoxication, as nicely outlined in our validation study (see previous post). https://www.knmg.nl/web/file?uuid=f2590117-fd31-4d06-a3d9-f3ade0bc1876&owner=5c945405-d6ca-4deb-aa16-7af2088aa173&contentid=70107&elementid=2086101
